Goldilocks is fifty-eight, and she's making her own porridge

Goldilocks is fifty-eight, and today, for the very first time in thirty years, she realises that nobody in the whole forest needs her any more.

Goldilocks has stood at the stove all her life tasting other people's porridge.

Daddy Bear's was always too hot. He never had the patience to let anything cool down. Mummy Bear's was always too cold. She was always too busy watching everybody else's bowl to notice her own. Baby Bear's came out "just right" every single time, and everybody called it luck, even though it wasn't. It was Goldilocks, every single day, for thirty years.

She never made herself a fourth bowl. There was always somebody who needed something, and their needs always came first. And she was perfectly fine with that.

Today is different.

Daddy Bear sits under his old pine most afternoons, content simply to watch the forest instead of trying to run it. Mummy Bear finally drinks her coffee whilst it's still hot, with nobody's bowl to mind but her own. And Baby Bear is still trying on different lives like beds that don't fit, too hard, too soft, because he hasn't lived long enough to understand that the right fit takes time, not brute force.

Today Goldilocks makes a bowl of porridge for herself, deliberately, in her own pan.

And she does something none of the bears has any time for. She reaches for the cinnamon, a generous pinch, and then a proper knob of butter on top, left to melt. Exactly the way she likes it, the way she remembers it.

She tastes it standing right there at the stove, straight off the spoon.

And it is sooooo good.

I wrote this after doing a reading for a 58-year-old woman who told me her best years were behind her.

I disagreed entirely. Her best years are about to start now.

She's in what I call the Goldilocks period of life. She's young enough to still take a real chance and run a bit of risk, and mature enough to know that life has to be grabbed with both hands. On top of that, she's got more time available and more energy to follow her curiosity and see where it takes her.

Absolutely perfect. In a way, she's freer now than she's ever been. She just has to choose to do something for her own sake.

If you're sitting there wondering whether your window has closed, you beautiful, forest-dwelling Facebook people, you're probably wrong. Statistically, the odds are far better that you're standing right in the middle of it 🥰
