David on the moment he died, and Grandad on the hard shoulder

This post follows on from an earlier one where my (dead) friend David offered to answer your questions. You asked 29 pages of questions and blew my mind! Anyway, here are more answers to the questions you asked. I will post a link to the original post in the comments.

Hi David! Do you know/understand/possibly learn from someone on the other side that you will die just before it happens? (Mona F.)

SIMON: Morning, mate! So here we are again, I've been looking forward to chatting, but time hasn't been on my side. Getting straight down to business, did you get any idea that you were going to die? Did someone tell you, or did you get a feeling about it?

DAVID: Yeah, I don't know about that. I didn't know anything about what was going to happen until it all started. You know when you get that sudden bang of adrenaline and your eyes go wide and you are totally focused on everything, well I got that. But I didn't have time to think about anything. I did think, "F**k!" and then that was it, lights out, until I woke up. So, no, I didn't get any idea that I was actually going to die, no.

SIMON: What do you mean, "until I woke up"?

DAVID: Well yeah, I woke up! You know what I mean. Lights out, nothing. As far as I was concerned I was in a (car) crash and was unconscious. And then I woke up, but I wasn't in my car, I was standing on the hard shoulder (side of the motorway) looking at the wreck. It was a bit surreal to be honest. I thought, bloody hell, what a mess. It was like someone had taken a giant tin opener to my car and thrown all the bits everywhere.

SIMON: So you didn't get any idea that you were going to die, you didn't get an ominous feeling earlier in the day that something was going to happen, no dead friends or relatives telling you anything, nothing like that?

DAVID: Nope, sorry mate. Don't get me wrong, there are people who do know it's going to happen, like Peter, you know, Alex's Dad. He knew it, he kept saying it, and his missus kept praying for him. It didn't help though, did it!

SIMON: This leads us nicely onto a question asked by Toril SD: When a person dies very suddenly, for example in an unexpected accident, does the soul understand that it is dead right away, or is it "hanging back" before it realizes what has happened and moves on to the other side?

DAVID: Right, well, it's different for everyone. In my case it was a bit of both, it's like you're there, but you're not there. You see what's going on but you're not really part of it. Like, I knew something was up when I saw Grandad Arthur standing on the verge (the edge of the motorway).

But even so, yeah, I felt like I was a bit stuck, I kept thinking stupid things like, oh I better tell the cops not to ring my missus, because she'd be fretting (worried) if she got a call from them. And I thought it was a bit bloody cheeky that none of the paramedics wanted to speak to me (David laughs). I was in proper shock, man! Oh yeah, and I kept thinking that I must get my (golf) clubs out of the back before they take the car away. It's stupid when you think about it.

SIMON: You said it is different for everyone. So some people know straight away that they are dead, and others take a bit longer?

DAVID: Yeah, that's it. Everyone's different. Everyone knows, yeah, that they're dead, in the end. It's not like you don't notice. And I think it depends who you have coming to tell you that you're dead. I guess that's why it's someone you know. It is a bit of a shock, like.

Some folk really cling on to life right at the end, I've seen it. Dying ain't difficult mate, but when they hold on too tight at the end. . . nah, it's better to go with the flow. But it takes all sorts, yeah. You never met my Grandad, he hated golf, didn't see the point. He didn't even like cricket!

SIMON: I'm curious, what did your Grandad say when you saw him? Was it like, "I've got some bad news for you", or was it something else?

DAVID: Nah, nah (David laughs loud)! Grandad's not like that. He had his hands in his pockets, nodded at the car and said, "You alright, Lad? That's a nasty business". To be honest, I didn't even think anything of it at the time, just thought like, oh, Grandad!

To be fair to him, he did pull me away from seeing it all, told me I didn't want to be gawping at it. And he was spot on. It was a right mental sight, like something out of a film. Mad as a box of frogs, it was.

Okay, that's where we will leave David for the moment. I am aware that I am slow at getting these answers out to you all. Sorry about that. I will try to get more written during Easter 🙂
